Ministry of Economics of Baden-Wuerttemberg informs itself about cooperation between Rolls- Royce Power Systems and Technology Business School of KIT

With the current shift away from internal combustion engines towards electrification, the engine manufacturing industry is undergoing a major transformation. The HECTOR School of Engineering and Management at the International Department of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) supports the Power Systems business unit of the British Rolls-Royce group with its product and solution brand MTU in its transformation from a traditional engine manufacturer to a provider of integrated solutions by training mechanical engineers to become electrical specialists.

The engine manufacturing industry is currently experiencing a major shift away from combustion engines towards electrified solutions. Rolls-Royce Power Systems is supported by the HECTOR School of Engineering and Management at the International Department of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in the process of transformation from a classic engine manufacturer to a system provider.

On September 24, 2020, Ms. Katrin Schütz, State Secretary of the Ministry of Economics, Labor and Housing of the State of Baden-Württemberg, informed herself about the project and options for transfer qualifications in the future-oriented development of electro mobility.

"To successfully master the structural change in Baden-Württemberg, we need qualified employees. One key to this is customized transfer qualifications in the companies. With its Portfolio the HECTOR School of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology is a successful example, how scientific further training can be brought and converted successfully in enterprises,” says State Secretary of Economics Katrin Schütz.

100 engineers at the Friedrichshafen site will receive further training with a focus on electrification in the fields of electrical engineering, automation and energy components. This process is divided into three phases, beginning with a basic qualification, a specialization and a subsequent part-time study at the HECTOR School. A group of ten employees is aiming for a master's degree in Energy Engineering & Management and Mobility Systems Engineering and Management. 

Important success factors are above all the integration of the project into the overall strategy of the company, continuous feedback discussions, cross-disciplinary professional exchange and a flexible adaptation of the lectures and labs to the needs of the participants.

The HECTOR School as Technology Business School of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) is the platform for engineers, economists and computer scientists for extra-occupational further education. Six M.Sc. programs deal with technological developments in production, logistics, finance and risk management, information technology as well as renewable energies or mobility. Staatssekretärin Katrin Schütz, Wirtschaftsministerium Baden-Württemberg, besuchte die Technology Business School des KIT und informierte sich über das Pioneer-Programm, ein von der HECTOR School, dem KIT und von Rolls-Royce initiiertem Weiterqualifizierungsprogramm.

Mit dem derzeitigen Wandel weg von Verbrennungsmotoren hin zur Elektrifizierung unterliegt die Branche von Triebwerksherstellern einem starken Wandel. Die HECTOR School of Engineering and Management am International Department des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) unterstützt den Geschäftsbereich Power Systems des britischen Rolls-Royce-Konzerns mit seiner Produkt- und Lösungsmarke MTU beim Wandel vom klassischen Motorenhersteller zum Anbieter integrierter Lösungen, indem Maschinenbauingenieure zu Elektrofachleuten weitergebildet werden.

Die Branche der Triebwerkshersteller erlebt derzeit eine starke Veränderung weg von Verbrennungsmotoren hin zu elektrifizierten Lösungen. Rolls-Royce Power Systems wird von der HECTOR School of Engineering and Management am International Department des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie (KIT) im Prozess der Transformation vom klassischen Motorenhersteller zum Systemanbieter unterstützt.

Am 24. September 2020 informierte sich Frau Katrin Schütz, Staatssekretärin Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Wohnungsbau des Landes Baden-Württemberg, über das Projekt und Optionen zu Transferqualifikationen in der zukunftsweisenden Weiterentwicklung der Elektromobilität.

„Um den Strukturwandel in Baden-Württemberg erfolgreich zu meistern, brauchen wir qualifizierte Beschäftigte. Ein Schlüssel hierzu ist eine maßgeschneiderte Transferqualifikation in den Unternehmen. Mit seinem Portfolio ist die HECTOR School des Karlsruher Instituts für Technologie ein gelungenes Beispiel, wie wissenschaftliche Weiterbildung erfolgreich in Unternehmen gebracht und umgesetzt werden kann“, so Wirtschaftsstaatssekretärin Katrin Schütz.

Es werden 100 Ingenieure des Standorts Friedrichshafen mit dem Fokus Elektrifizierung in den Bereichen Elektrotechnik, Automatisierung und Energiekomponenten weiterqualifiziert. Dieser Prozess gliedert sich in drei Phasen, beginnend mit einer Grundqualifikation, einer Vertiefung und einem anknüpfenden, berufsbegleitenden Studium an der HECTOR School. Eine Gruppe von zehn Mitarbeitern strebt einen Masterabschluss in den Bereichen Energy Engineering & Management und Mobility Systems Engineering & Management an.

Wichtige Erfolgsfaktoren sind vor allem die Einbindung des Projekts in die Gesamtstrategie des Unternehmens, kontinuierliche Feedbackgespräche, übergreifender fachlicher Austausch und eine flexible Anpassung der Organisation der Lehre an die Bedarfe der Teilnehmenden.
